The Truth About Residential Reverse Osmosis Systems
By: Mike Lombardy

Almost everyone is aware that the water that comes out of the tap contains several harmful chemicals including debris, which are not beneficial for drinking, or any other purpose. Modern technology has come up with a number of water filtration systems that you can choose from to solve this. The problem is that it can be a bit confusing when you come to make a choice of residential reverse osmosis systems.

Minerals in the water

Residential reverse osmosis systems have been around for a long time and are widely available on the market. You have more than likely read that they are one of the best types of water filtration systems around.

Here's why. Using a series of filters a reverse osmosis system removes debris and minerals from the water. Once it's passed through the filters the water is more or less pure.

Many window cleaners in the UK use these systems. If you use it to wash your windows it doesn't leave any watermarks on the glass, they are sparkling clean.

But while it's great for the window cleaners, the downside of a reverse osmosis system residential water purifier it is not the best choice if you need healthy and clean water for your residential use.

Studies by water industry experts have shown that the residential reverse osmosis system would remove a pretty fair amount of all the harmful contaminants that are involved in the drinking water. So what's the problem? They generally fail to remove the most harmful chemicals and they also strip the water of its mineral content. Ideally the water we drink should include the natural minerals, which are essential as a part of our diet.

Many of the reverse osmosis system residential water purifiers strip these natural and organic minerals from the water. The result of this is that you will have to find another source for these minerals for your body, like costly synthetic multi-vitamins.

Therefore it is very important that when you choose any water filtration system for your household water requirements that it does not extract these vital minerals. Look for a filtration system that allows the minerals to pass through, so that you receive mineral rich water.

Chemicals in the water

The one thing that almost no one knows about residential reverse osmosis systems concerns chemical removal. While they are excellent at removing the mineral content of the water some types leave behind all the unsafe chemicals.

Although the residential reverse osmosis system remove all the contaminants that are in the water in the form of large molecules and particles they often do not work to remove the contaminants, which are in smaller molecules.

Substances like herbicides, pesticides, chlorine or even some prescription drugs all have very tiny molecules, so they are not filtered out. Naturally, this could be very dangerous for your health.

The reverse osmosis system residential water purifiers usually work by letting the water pass through the fine membrane that is inside the filter. This membrane catches the contaminants in the water and lets the water pass through.

However the problem is that the membrane used in most reverse osmosis systems is actually not enough to remove all those harmful contaminants. This is simply because most of the contaminants have molecules that are smaller than the water molecules.

This allows them to pass through the membrane and remain in the water even though it's been filtered.

So there you have it. Although residential reverse osmosis systems will help you to improve your water quality they are not necessarily the best option for water purifying for your family.
